One of the common methods of word formation in any language is the use of verbal derivational prefixes that are added to the beginning of verbs to create new meanings. In Iranian languages, such prefixes are widely used. In the Gilaki language prefixed verbs have also been prevalent since early times. Today, in Gilaki copular and compound verbs being formed by such prefixes, there exists a morpheme that is often overlooked in Gilaki grammar. In Gilaki dictionaries, this morpheme is frequently attached to the non-verbal part rather than the verb itself. For example, sard âkudan is written as sarda kudan. Some authors, unaware of the true nature of this morpheme, have offered various explanations for such constructions. This study, using both documentary and field methods, traces these types of verbs in Gilaki dictionaries and, through comparison with neighboring languages (Mazandarani, Semnani, Tati, and Talysh), shows that the verbs in Gilaki using this morpheme often correspond to the same verbs in the mentioned languages that employ the â- prefix. Recognizing this morpheme will allow for more accurate documentation in Gilaki texts and dictionaries.
