Mood in Persian is expressed through a diverse set of verbal and devices that differ considerably in their syntactic behavior, degree of semantic dependence, and level of grammaticalization. Unlike many languages in which the mood system is based on a relatively limited set of grammaticalized modal verbs, the Persian mood system has a multilayered structure that includes core modal verbs, non-lexical quasi-modal verbs, modal expressions, lexical quasi-modal verbs, as well as lexical verbs with modal meanings. Drawing on established syntactic–semantic and formal criteria and recent theoretical literature on modality, the present study provides a continuum-based analysis of these devices and demonstrates that classifying them within a unified hierarchical system offers a more accurate representation of the grammatical reality of Persian. The analysis is based on authentic Persian data and a critical review of previous studies, and seeks to provide a reliable framework for syntactic and semantic studies of Persian and other Iranian languages. The findings of the study indicate that these verbs can be positioned along a continuum, with modal verbs at one end and lexical verbs at the other
