Abstract: (408 Views)
For successful language planning, understanding the linguistic attitudes of community members is of great importance. The study of language attitudes is related to two areas: perceptual dialectology and socio- cognitive linguistics. The present study aims to examine Persian speakers’ attitudes toward local varieties of the Persian language and to answer the question of how social variables influence individuals’ attitudes in the domains of status, education, use, and preservation of these varieties. The study sample consists of 224 Persian-speaking university students residing in Karaj, selected through semi-random sampling. The fixed variables in this research include age, gender, and being monolingual or bilingual. The results show that a higher percentage of men support the preservation and teaching of local varieties. At the same time, positive attitudes toward the preservation, education, and use of local varieties increase with age. Bilingual individuals have a more favorable attitude toward the teaching of local varieties in schools than monolinguals do. Overall, the strongest positive attitude is toward the preservation of varieties (79%), followed by education and learning of local varieties (73%). Additionally, 65% of participants expressed a positive attitude toward the use of local varieties, and 63% had a positive attitude toward their status.
